About UN-ARCSSTEE
The African Regional Centre for Space Science and Technology Education in English (ARCSSTE-E), inaugurated in Nigeria on November 24, 1998, is one of two African space centers established by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA). Located at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, the Centre serves as a hub for space science and technology education for Anglophone African countries. It operates under the auspices of UN-OOSA, which was mandated by the UN General Assembly to assist member states in enhancing their indigenous capacity in utilizing space science and technology for national and regional development.
ARCSSTE-E’s vision focuses on human resource development and public awareness about the benefits and applications of space science and technology for sustainable development in the African region. The Centre aims to improve the quality of life through rigorous education, training, and outreach programs, thereby empowering and informing the public on the importance of space for development. The Centre’s mission is to build a high-quality capacity and a critical mass of indigenous space scientists and educators in English-speaking African countries, facilitating the development and application of space science and technology for sustainable national and regional growth.
The Centre’s mandate encompasses developing skills and knowledge in five key areas: Remote Sensing/GIS, Satellite Meteorology & Global Climate, Satellite Communication, Basic Space & Atmospheric Science, and Global Navigation Satellite System. These areas are crucial for addressing various developmental challenges and enhancing the socio-economic development of the region. With its strategic location and robust support from both national and international institutions, ARCSSTE-E plays a pivotal role in advancing space science education and fostering collaboration across the African continent.
